All of us at Tea Party Brew have been following the Chris Christie speculation with interest. The renewed speculation on a possible run was sparked by Perry’s missteps, and has turned into an almost daily will-he-won’t-he, with new information being released quite often.
We’re trying to avoid delving too much into the particulars of this particular drama, but a Politico piece posted last night caught our eye.
Three sources who are aware of the discussions in Christieland said their perception is it’s likelier than not that he stays out of the 2012 race.
However, all three said the same thing – it’s a family discussion between Christie and his wife Mary Pat, and he could still decide to run.
The piece goes on to discuss Christie’s potential path to the nomination, which requires a strong showing in Iowa and New Hampshire, and a run against Mitt Romney.
That it’s more likely than not that Christie stays out is something everyone already knows. But the revelation that it’s a discussion between him and his wife is interesting. If she’s against it and he’s interested, it calls into question his drop-dead statements against running that have made so much news over the past year. It also calls to mind a very important aspect of running a campaign, namely that if a candidate’s entire family isn’t completely on board, a candidacy is almost certainly doomed from the start.
Politico notes that Christie’s path to reelection in New Jersey is less uncertain than one would expect. Their unexpected defeat in 2009 and Christie’s ability to work with the Senate Democrats in his state has left the Democratic Party in disarray, and there is no clear candidate to run against him. Unless Cory Booker, the mayor of Newark, chooses to run, Christie looks to have a viable path to reelection.
